The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that various communities in the metropolis had in recent times evacuated refuse from drainage’s in their areas as part of efforts to prevent flooding this rainy season.
The communities embarked on the exercise in compliance with the directive of REMASAB, following the downpour in the city.
Some of the residents, who spoke to NAN on Saturday, said the call was necessary in view of the danger of possible outbreak of diseases if the dumps were not evacuated.
Malam Bala Fagge, a resident in the area, said the refuse, which was evacuated from drainages through self-help had not been cleared by the agency.
He complained that the heap of refuse had taken over some roads in the area thereby forcing motorists and other road users to divert to other roads.
“We are using this opportunity to call on the board to save us from the bad odour emanating from the refuse dumps,’’ he said.
He urged the board to take stringent disciplinary measures against residents who defaulted in evacuating refuse from drains.
Fagge noted that some residents had not complied with the order despite the notice given to them to clear their drains.
Another resident, Alhaji Lawan Abdullahi, also urged the board to ensure speedy evacuation of the refuse to ensure healthy environment.
The Managing Director of REMASAB, Mr Abdullahi Bichi was said to be out of town but an official of the board who preferred anonymity, said that the board was making efforts to evacuate the refuse.
He said the state government recently engaged the services of some private firms to complement the agency’s efforts to evacuate refuse from the city.
He said the private firms had agreed to charge residents a token fee for the services rendered. (NAN)
