Rice farmers in Kano State are expecting bumper harvest this year owing to new techniques introduced to them.

Sasakawa Africa, in collaboration with Kano State Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (KNARDA), have introduced them to a new method that could boost rice production.

Disclosing this to Sasakawa Africa’s team and other agricultural development stakeholders during a field visit by the team, leader of Bugau Rice Farmers Association in Kura local government of the state, said with the new techniques introduced to them, they are optimistic of yield higher than what they were getting using the old methods.

“We have started seeing the difference even before harvest. The new techniques cost us less and by mere looking at the rice plantations here, we are certain that all things being equal, we will have higher harvest this year.

“We have adopted the new planting spacing, fertilizer application, use of certified seeds and seed broadcasting system. These are new to us, but we have accepted them all and we are glad that we did,” he said.

Speaking to the farmers, Sasakawa country director, Professor Sani Miko, told them that the team was going round to see the impact of the new methodology.
