The Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) on Friday sealed head office of Ecobank in the state for tax evasion.

The agency also sealed the head office of Zenith Bank, AY Mai Kifi Construction, among many other business premises for tax default.

The closure is in line with an order of expatriate issued by Kano State High Court over the the institutions’ failure to audit and pay their taxes, accruing to over 740 million naira.

Briefing newsmen during the exercise, the acting Director, Debt Management and Enforcement of the agency, Hashim Hussain Adam, said the enforcement is in line with agency’s mandate of increased compliance.

He explained that, “Our today’s enforcement exercise led to the sealing of Zenith and Eco banks and some other business premises belonging to taxpayers who refuse to settle their outstanding tax liability.

“The sealed premises would only be unsealed when the defaulters comply by paying their outstanding liabilities.

“Compliance is not optional, it is civic responsibility of taxpayers to pay their taxes as at when due,” the Director added.

Daily Trust reports that hundreds of customers who trooped to the affected bank branches for transactions earlier in the morning had to later leave following the seal.
