The Kano State government has secured a N177.4 billion loan facility from the French Development Agency to construct new waterworks at Tamburawa and improve water distribution in Greater Kano.
The project aims to enhance access to drinkable water in response to the state’s rapid population growth.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Ali Haruna Makoda, disclosed this during a two-day project coordination and review workshop in Kano, which was attended by representatives from Plateau, Enugu, and Ondo states.
He said the project will be carried out under the National Urban Water Reform Project and is guaranteed by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation.

Yusuf emphasised the importance of the project, which had faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges, but is now on track to be completed within the next two years.
Engr. Garba Ahmad Bichi, Managing Director of the Kano State Water Board noted that the project includes the construction of an additional water intake station with a capacity of 250 million litres per day, which will significantly address water shortages in the city amid its growing population.
