Shekarau made the statement when receiving the report on the data base, geographic system information, soil analysis, and crop data in relation to the state pilot rice development program carried out by a Malaysian firm.

 He said, the state government had concluded plans to rehabilitate three of the 13 dams and irrigation schemes spread across the state  in efforts to make available land and water for an all year round rice production in the state.

The governor disclosed that the state accounted  for the production of seven percent of  rice consumed in the country, adding that the state possessed the potentials and capacity to produce 20 percent of the needed rice for consumption in the country; a level where if attained would have a multiplier effect on the economy of the state.

Speaking at the presentation,  Anas Ahmad Nasirudeen, the Chief executive officer of the company Marditech said the project was geared toward land suitability for rice production and the creation of a map for agricultural development planning in the state, revealing that the first phase of the project were experimented in Thomas, Magaga, and Watari dams.
