The Kano State Government said it is planning to convert the state’s central prison located in Kurmawa to a historical museum.
The state said it will relocate the inmates to a newly built custodial facility in Janguza, located few kilometers from the city on Kano-Gwarzo Road.
The century old prison is one of the British colonial masters’ legacies established in 1910 and situated behind Kano emir’s palace with a capacity for 690 then.
The Special Adviser to the Kano state Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Information, Ibrahim Adam confirmed the development on Sunday.

He said, “Kano State government under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf will transfer all inmates currently at the Kurmawa Correctional Centre to Janguza, while the Kurmawa Correctional Centre will be transformed into a museum dedicated to preserving historical artefacts and promoting the rich culture of the State,” Adam wrote.
The aide also said the new museum facility will be used to preserve historical artifacts and highlight Kano’s rich cultural legacy and is expected to serve both educational and tourism functions, offering insights into the state’s colonial and correctional past while freeing up space for modern rehabilitation initiatives.
Kano State currently has ten correctional centres, including two within the capital city and others spread across local government areas.
Daily Trust reports that the Janguza facility was built under the administration of late President Muhammadu Buhari and can accommodate up to 3,000 inmates.
