Our reporters who visited the area found out that what used to be a crowded settlement now looks like a deserted area as people rushed to rescue what they could.
The affected areas include Gaida, Sabon Gida Ja’en and Hotoro Quarters in Gwale local government area of the state and Audu Saye, Tinshama, Hotoro-Kawon Maigari Quarters, in Nassarawa local government area mostly occupied by low income earners.
Residents have already started removing some valuables like zinc, windows and gates.
It was also observed that the houses marked for demolition are mostly situated either near or directly below the high tension cables.
It was also revealed that because of the increase in population in the state, land owners are said to have become greedy, with some of them selling lands that belong to the electricity generating company and erecting structures indiscriminately.
A resident of the area, Malam Abba Isah Hotoro said houses used to maintain a distance of at least 100 metres from the cables but in recent times, that has not been the case.
“Take a look from the present CBN quarters down to the Hotoro police station, you will see that all the houses maintain that distance of at least 100metres.
“We were told that was the distance that was supposed to be maintained. We all knew that the occupants of such structures were indeed living on a borrowed time as the danger posed to their lives is clear,” said Isah.
Another resident of the area said most of these structures were not occupied by the owners because the owners knew the danger, so they rented them out to desperate tenants.
