The 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has said it is too late for the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 general elections in Kano State, Nasiru Gawuna, and other APC stalwarts in the state to accept defeat.
Sanusi stated this at a parley which video went viral where he spoke on accepting destiny.
The APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, and other leaders of the party had been rooting for Gawuna to take over governance in the state after the tribunal and the appeal court sacked Governor Kabiru Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). However, the Supreme Court last Friday set aside the lower courts’ rulings.
Shortly after the apex court dashed his hopes of taking over the government, Gawuna in an interview with BBC Hausa Service, said he accepted the apex court’s judgment on the governorship dispute as God’s decision.
But responding to Gawuna’s assertion, the former central bank governor said it was too late for Gawuna and the APC leaders to claim they were accepting the defeat as God’s decision.
“The best time to accept destiny is after the polls. You knew people did not vote for you. You knew you lost but made moves to hijack power. It’s too late.
“When people vote, any attempt to stifle their choice is a shared injustice. The robbery is not on the winner, but the electorate. God would never allow this.
“One laughable thing is that after some people were defeated in an election, they went to court to hijack power. At last in the court they met Allah in wait. After stopping them from gaining power by force, now they said that they have accepted His decision,” he further said.
Daily Trust had reported that shortly after the apex court’s decision, calls for the reinstatement of Sanusi as Emir of Kano resurfaced.
Sanusi was dethroned as Emir of Kano by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in 2020 after he was accused of insubordination, among others.
