This was disclosed by the Executive Director, LCRI, Dr. Oluwasina Gbenga Olabanji, during the monitoring and evaluation meeting with the wheat farmers association and other stakeholders held in Kano.
 He said the institute was in the state to discuss with wheat farmers associations on achievements, constraints and the way forward.
Dr. Olabanji noted that to meet up with the increase in demand for wheat in the nation and halt importation, there is a need for all hands to be on deck to improve production and marketing.
He revealed that the institute has proposed for the 2015/2016 dry season farming a 150,000 hectare farm with average yield of four tons per hectare in order to complement the four million metric tons needed annually in the nation.
He said the institute would give wheat farmers equipment at 75% subsidy to encourage them to increasing wheat production.
Speaking to newsmen after the meeting, National President of the Wheat Farmers Association of Nigeria, Salim Saleh Muhammad, said the association has done a lot to see that members were encouraged to do more.
Muhammad stated that the demand on wheat locally has increased and that the association has been sensitising members on the development so as to take up the challenge which, he stressed, needs serious effort from both farmers and government agencies to be attained.
