The Kano State Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA) will start arresting tricycle riders who refuse to renew their driving permit. 

The agency’s Managing Director, Baffa Babba Dan-Agundi, who stated this in Kano while briefing newsmen on the activities of the agency in 2021, said the action would serve as a reminder to the defaulting riders to renew the permit. 

“Those who are obtaining the permit for the first time will pay N18,000, while those renewing it will only pay N8,000,” Dan-Agundi said, adding that the official date for the commencement of arrests was January 1, 2022. 

The MD also said the agency had partnered with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to arrest drivers without speed limit on their vehicles and hand them over to the corps for proper action. 

He said: “As part of our new policies for 2022, KAROTA officials will start arresting all drivers without a speed limit meter on their vehicles and hand them over to the FRSC. 

Dan-Agundi also said the agency recruited 1,000 new staff in 2021 and increased operational vehicles from three to 60, and 50 new power bikes. 

He also said during the year under review, the agency’s operatives arrested thieves who masqueraded as tricycle riders to steal children, snatch phones and commit other crimes and that most of them had been taken to court.
