Many residents had in the past complained that the abattoir where about 150 cattle and 750 goats and sheep are slaughtered daily was an eyesore and poses health risk.
Because of the numerous complaints, former Minister of the FCT Aliyu Modibbo in 2008 promised that a modern abattoir would be built.
Madayi told journalists in Abuja that government had signed an “MoU with Capital Meat Company for the establishment of Abuja Central Abattoir at Tunga-Maje”.
The abattoir which will be built through Public Private Partnership will be completely mechanized, it will have meat processing component including production of meat products like hamburgers, steaks and hot-dog, she said.
When asked what government was doing concerning clashes between herdsmen and farmers in the FCT, she said the cattle people in the city will be relocated when grazing reserves are established.
The secretary said four reserves have been earmarked for the herdsmen with eight dams and nomadic schools but lack of money to compensate farmers who will be moved out of the reserve areas have affected the move.
She enumerated achievements of the administration saying, 2,846 animals have been immunized this year; 50,000 seedlings of fruit crops have been developed in nurseries in Bwari and Bako; and 60 tractors distributed – 10 to each of the six area councils.
