A  28-year-old  Facebook critic in Katsina was yesterday sentenced  to two months imprisonment for defaming personalities in the state.

Sani Tanimu, aka Kanute, was said to have defamed the state governor, Aminu Masari; his deputy, Manir Yakubu; a former House of Representatives member, Sada Soli Jibia and a former commissioner in the state, Yusuf Ibrahim.

Kanute was dragged to court following a complaint lodged by Yusuf Ibrahim which led to his arrest and subsequent prosecution by the police.

Last Tuesday, Kanute pleaded guilty to the charges of defamation of character and intentional insult read to him at the Chief Magistrate Court 1. 

Delivering judgement, the presiding senior magistrate, Nurradeen El-Laden, said Kanute’s actions were contrary to sections 393 and 399 of the Criminal Code Laws.

He then sentenced him to two months in prison which would run concurrently.
