About 12,000 metric tonnes of the commodity was purchased by the past administration and at the tail end of the regime, the fertiliser was alleged to have been distributed to political associates and friends of the administration that were not farmers leaving real farmers in the state without any.
Several farmers have cried out over the non-availability of fertilisers which they said is greatly affecting their activities and that many of them have resorted to buying from the open market at about N5,500 as against government’s subsidised price of N1,700.
The state Governor, Aminu Masari said his administration has already embarked on the recovery of such fertilisers purchased with public fund and disbursed to politicians that were not farmers. He said such beneficiaries will either pay for the fertilisers fraudulently allocated to them or return the commodity back to government.
“I met only 2,000 metric tonnes in government stores, with all gone to cronies and allies. Government purchased this commodity and even subsidised it only for them to collect and not pay up. We won’t allow this.
“In the interim, aside this recovery action, my administration is evolving a quick intervention of getting another 4,000 tonnes purely for grassroots farmers in the shortest possible time,” he added.
He said the same scenario was found in seeds and tractors procurement, adding that all that belongs to the common man who is the true farmer shall be recovered for him to boost farming in the state.
