The Katsina State Government and United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) built 130 toilets in schools across the state to stop teachers and students from defecating in the open.
The UNICEF Chief Field Officer in charge of Kano and Katsina states, Padmavathi Yedla, made this known after commissioning some toilets and water supply facilities at Mudulu Primary School, Mai’adua, Katsina State. He said that the project was executed under Sanitation, Hygiene and Water in Nigeria (SHAWN) project.
“We are currently working in 155 schools and health facilities in Katsina,” she said, adding that “next year, we will work in more than 500 schools and health facilities in 700 communities.”
She said that open defecation posed serious health hazards, adding that it must be tackled for improved healthy living condition.
In his remarks, the commissioner for water resources, Alhaji Salisu Gambo, said that the collaboration had so far provided 704 hand pumps, 20 solar boreholes, 130 toilet facilities in schools and 25 toilet facilities in health centres in the 11 participating local government areas.
