The primary responsibility of any government, be it state, federal or local, is the provision of economic rights and safeguarding the lives of its people. Infrastructural development and others are also part and parcel of the foundation of any stable society. Society’s equilibrium of balance is based on security, economic reliability, social justice, development in this scale of preference. For this to be achieved, good governance has to become the watchword of an administration. It is this basic principle of governance that is being enjoyed in Katsina State by the good citizens, thanks to Governor Ibrahim Shema’s driven pursuit of stability and growth.
Despite the growing insecurity in the country, the state has been spared largely due to deliberate but conscious efforts of the administration through youth empowerment programmes, women development, infrastructural growth and social justice. Millions of youths who were hitherto roaming the streets begging, or engaged in political thuggery were mobilized, trained, or undergoing training in local and international training centres. The women empowerment programme and the handicapped projects are all geared towards improving the living standards of the various people of the state.
For any government to succeed it has to be effective and efficient. The quantum of success recorded in the last seven years across the length and breadth of the state is commendable and communities who hitherto were unaware of government presence are now dancing, enjoying the dividends of democracy they never dreamt possible. If we consider the number of schools, electrification, water supply, road networks, agricultural schemes and youth employment, no community has been left behind in the state.
Women and girl child education have received the healthy attention ever since the creation of the state, with millions of former female drop-outs attracted back to classroom through a neat cash-transfer system, which not only provides free education to girls but also a monthly N5,000 support cash for mothers of the girls. This is to ensure double-edged advantage to the families of the school-going girls. Also, another healthy sector in the state is the health sector. The state under Shema has witnessed improved health delivery system with upgraded general hospitals, specialized centres and improved working conditions for health service workers. Rural ambulance system was introduced to carter for the needs of millions of rural dwellers who find it hard to access the available health centres across the state. Also growing well, is the agricultural sector, with extension workers recruited and trained on modern farming techniques, fertilizer readily made available with other farming needs. Food production has increased by over 200% since 2007 and food security is strengthened.
The roll call of extraordinary changes recorded since 2007 is lengthy, so it’s no wonder the state has remained one of the few that have recorded improved standard of living judging from recognition from local, national and international institutions in relevant sectors. We’re indeed witnessing the Katsina of our dreams.
