This means that he has dewired himself  from political activities.
But Sumaila recently found his voice and faulted the report that he has gone on political exile following his inability to secure the running mate seat.
Kawu contested for the governorship ticket of the APC in the state but withdrew for Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje who later won.
His withdrawal from the race followed the calculation that he would be given the running mate to Ganduje. But after various politicking, Professor Hafiz Abubakar, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) of the Bayero University Kano (BUK) was picked as Ganduje’s running mate. Angered by the development, Sumaila said he would only work for the Presidential candidate of the party, General Muhammadu Buhari and that other candidates of the party are on their own.
Bit his going on exile he said, “I’m fully on ground politically. It is wrong to say that I’ve gone on political exile. Since the campaign of General Buhari in Kano, I have been attending to my political commitment. To clear the rumour in the state, I did not go to the campaign ground with the posters of the PDM candidate. His supporters joined me while I was entering the stadium,” he said.
