Kayode waiting for Italy, closes door on Super Eagles

Brentford defender. Michael Kayode, has revealed his desire to represent Italy, not Nigeria, on the international scene.

The highly rated full back disclosed his readiness to wait for the Azzurri call-up, effectively closing the door on the possibility of representing his country of heritage Nigeria.

Born to Nigerian parents in Borgomanero in Italy, Kayode broke through at Fiorentina before joining Brentford where his stock has continued to rise.

The dual citizen’s emergence comes at a time the Italy national team has been underwhelming in recent years, and failed to qualify for consecutive World Cups.

It is also a similar story for the Super Eagles of Nigeria who have suffered same fat despite its array of stars.

Both countries have long struggled to find lasting solutions to their fullback positions, and Kayode’s rise and form could provide a long-term solution.

However the Juventus academy product who has featured in the under-18, under-19, and under-21 Italy national team sides, told Italian media that he will wait for the Italian job.

“I will always give priority to Italy: even at youth level, I grew up wearing the blue jersey. I hope to be able to realize this dream as soon as possible, but I have no doubts about which path to choose.”

Kayode did not get a call-up for Italy’s failed 2026 World Cup playoff matches despite meeting then-coach Gennaro Gatusso, but the 21-year-old says his heart is with the two-time World Cup winners.

“Yes, we even had a dinner with the Premier League players. I had a great time, I felt involved even without being called up for the playoffs.”

Kayode has made 35 Premier League appearances for Brentford this season, the highest for any Italian in the league.
