The Federal Government has restated its commitment to strengthening the Safe School Initiative following Monday’s attack on the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State, where 25 students were abducted by gunmen.

Minister of State for Finance, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite, gave the assurance during the 2025 International Students’ Day celebration in Abuja.

Uzoka-Anite urged for the immediate and safe release of the abducted students while wishing a quick recovery to the staff member who was shot.

“No student should have to go through that kind of experience,” she said, stressing that school safety is a shared responsibility involving communities, government institutions, and security agencies.

She assured that the federal government would continue funding education, teachers’ salaries, school feeding, and safety programmes through initiatives such as the Safe School Initiative.

Celebrating outstanding students across the country, the Minister highlighted the importance of recognising excellence: “Today, we celebrate the future of Nigeria. In the 61 graduating students receiving laptops, we see tomorrow’s digital innovators; and in the 29 MSc scholarship recipients, we see future professors and policy shapers.”

Awards were presented to top graduates from universities across all six geopolitical zones, including Federal University Dutsin-Ma, Prince Abubakar Audu University, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Rivers State University, Federal University of Technology Owerri, and Federal University Wukari.
