The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kebbi State has petitioned the National Judicial Council ( NJC), Kebbi State Judicial Service Commission, International Human Rights Commission and others over what it called executive use of the judicial process to persecute its members.
The State Secretary of the party, Abubakar Bawa Kalgo at a press conference, at party’s secretariat in Birnin kebbi, titled ‘A Call for Intervention by the National Judicial Council and Kebbi State Judicial Service Commission said the ADC chairman in the state, Sufiyanu Bala and other members, Umar Abubakar, Hussaina Ahmed Jega and Nasiru Garba Hashim were arrested and detained but no substantive case was ever heard before they were granted bail.
He said Hussaina Ahmed Jega, a female member of the party was also detained from 20th January to 10th April 2026. “Her bail was initially denied despite illness, then granted the following day. The substantive case was never heard, this was same of Nasiru Garba Hashim, another member that was arrested in Lagos, transferred to kebbi and detained for over two months.
Reacting, Kebbi State Government has denied allegations linking it to the persecution of the ADC members in the state. The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ahmed Idris in a release said
“We wish to categorically state that government has nothing to do with the crisis going on in the ADC.What is happening in ADC is internal crisis. He added that Its the factional leader of the party, Abdulrasak Abubakar who dragged his rival, Safiyyanu Bala before a Magistrate Court over alleged contempt of court.
The State Police Command in a release signed by the public relations officer SP Bashir Usman also refutes alleged unlawful detention of Engr Sufiyanu Bala, chairman of the state ADC.
It said “For clarity, Engr. Sufiyanu Bala is in police custody strictly in compliance with a valid remand order issued by the Chief Magistrate Court Birnin Kebbi pending his appearance before the Court on Monday 27th April, 2026 for further proceedings.
It said it’s remand is on judicial directive and not an arbitrary or unlawful action by the Police.
