A youth advocacy group, Kebbi Progressive Youths (KEPYO), has described a viral Facebook post on the state of healthcare delivery in Kebbi State as inaccurate and lacking proper context.

In a statement issued in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday, the group’s spokesperson, Musa Usman, said while some hospitals in the state have experienced infrastructural challenges in the past, the administration of Governor Nasir Idris has taken steps to address them.

“Even the governor himself has admitted that there have been gaps in the healthcare sector. But rather than ignore the issues, he has since commenced a holistic response,” Usman noted.

He explained that several health facilities across Kebbi State have undergone upgrades in the last two years, including the provision of new medical equipment, renovation of buildings, and measures to improve the work environment for healthcare professionals.

According to KEPYO, the state government has also recruited more personnel and prioritised the welfare of health workers to ensure improved service delivery.

On the viral post, the group said the use of isolated images to generalise about the state’s healthcare system did not give a full picture of ongoing interventions.

Usman added that the government has, on several occasions, temporarily closed hospitals to allow for renovation and upgrading works, which may explain some of the images that circulated online.

The group urged social media users and citizen journalists to exercise caution and responsibility when raising issues of public concern, stressing that constructive criticism should be based on facts and context.

KEPYO further reiterated its commitment to supporting government efforts aimed at ensuring accessible and quality healthcare for residents of Kebbi State.

“As young people, we have a duty to be fair in our assessment of governance. Yes, there are gaps, but there are also measurable improvements. We must strike a balance and encourage the government where it is making progress while constructively engaging it on areas that require more attention,” the statement concluded.
