Below are the key highlights of the government’s coordinated emergency response:
1. Acting on the directive of His Excellency, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, the Deputy Governor, Professor Kaletapwa G. Farauta, promptly mobilized relevant government agencies, including the military and marine police, to the affected areas immediately after the incident.
2. The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other relevant bodies were tasked with providing urgent relief and support to affected residents.
3. All engine boats and rescue equipment deployed during the emergency response are owned by the Adamawa State Government, underscoring the state’s preparedness for disaster situations.
4. Upon his return to the state on the morning of Monday, July 28, 2025, Governor Fintiri personally visited the affected communities in Yola, where he sympathized with victims and assessed the scale of destruction.
5. During a visit to the temporary shelter at Aliyu Mustafa College, Yola, the Governor announced the establishment of a technical committee to comprehensively assess the flood’s impact and recommend appropriate interventions.
6. Governor Fintiri also declared that all structures built on waterways would be demolished, and the affected water channels properly reconstructed and restored, as part of long-term measures to prevent future flooding.
7. He further condemned the spread of false and misleading information regarding the incident, describing such actions as irresponsible and politically motivated.
8. A technical team from the Upper Benue River Basin Development Authority (UBRBDA) is conducting an on-site assessment of an ongoing dam construction project in the Kofsopah District, Fufore LGA.
9. UBRBDA’s inspection covers the dam structure, its catchment area, and the surrounding environment, aiming to identify any potential hydrological risks. This follows public concerns about a possible connection between the project and the flooding downstream. UBRBDA will submit its findings to the Federal Ministry of Water Resources.
10. Additionally, the Adamawa State Government, in collaboration with the North East Development Commission (NEDC), is providing immediate relief and developing a comprehensive long-term recovery plan for affected communities.
11. On Thursday, July 30, 2025, Governor Fintiri visited the Kofsopah Dam site in Fufore to personally assess concerns linking it to the recent tragic flooding in Yola. Preliminary expert findings indicate no threat from the dam. Governor Fintiri stated that the government is deploying more professionals to ensure a thorough technical review.
