A former Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Alhaji Bala Kaoje, has urged the federal government to kick-start the provision of 300,000 houses to Nigerians under the Economic Sustainability Plan (ESP).

Alhaji Bala, who spoke at the Builders Congress 2020, a physical and virtual conference of the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON), in Abuja yesterday, stressed the need for sustainability in projects’ implementation.

Speaking as chairman of the event on the theme: “Sustainable Development, Policies, Practices and Technologies in Construction” Alhaji Kaoje said, “The federal government’s 300,000 housing programme is yet to commence after the policy was announced close to a year now. I don’t know when it will kick-start, but let us pray that in 2021 the government will roll out land to start the social housing programme that it promised Nigerians.”

He added that there was the need to reawaken the leadership in the country to the culture of sustaining policies, since according to him, there was no particular policy that had been followed to the letter.

The Chairman of CORBON, Prof. Kabiu Bala, said the theme was carefully picked to highlight issues bordering on sustainable development in the construction sector in particular and the built environment generally.

Seventy-nine new builders were inducted into the council and awards were presented to some construction companies.
