Kidnapping: FCT community decries withdrawal of police

Residents allege police pulled out after failing to get N20,000 daily stipend for two days

Residents of Tungan-Maje in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), a community on the fringes of the capital city which had experienced series of kidnapping in the past few months, have decried the withdrawal of police from the area.

Some community leaders in the area who spoke to Aso Chronicle lamented that 27 policemen deployed following their request left the area about a week ago.

An elder, who would not want to be named, alleged that, “Police worked for about two weeks and we provided them with a daily welfare allowance of N20,000, but we failed to give the money for two days and the next thing was that they left our area without any communication with us.”

Another resident said the area which had suffered kidnapping on six occasions was left to live in fear as the military which had presence around the community did not respond to distress calls.

Reacting, the FCT police spokesperson, ASP Mariam Yusuf, refuted the claim of the residents of providing the deployed policemen with the said N20,000 stipend.

She added that the police were overwhelmed with other security issues in other places within the FCT, hence they had to redeploy their men.

She, however, said the police was still maintaining an outpost there, in addition to mobile patrols and information gathering.
