Dozens of children between the ages of 10 and 15 run errands such as washing of plates for fees at Bayero University Kano (BUK) hostels.
Most of the children frequent the hostels to do these works to earn pocket monies.
Aside from these children are also girls who sell food items like Awara, local Soya bean cake and sachet water otherwise known as ‘pure water’.
Some of the children attend schools and only go to look for work at the hostels after school hours while others attend Islamiyya schools only.
One of the girls Salame, who is about 15 years old, sells Awara and is very popular in the hostels.
One student said, “apart from the girls hawking, there are others who stay at the market place to wash plates, fetch water and do other economic activities. Some boys are also available at the boys’ hostel to fetch water. They are called “Deboruwa” and also wash students’ clothes for a fee.”
