The Plateau State Government has warned residents against taking the law into their hands or engaging in any form of reprisals, amid rising tensions in some parts of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of the state.

The government urged residents to cooperate fully with security agencies to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

This is coming after a wave of violence in Jong, Jol, and Dorowa Babuje communities of Barkin Ladi and Riyom local government areas of the state, resulting in the deaths of more than a dozen people.

The development has raised security tensions in Jos, prompting the deployment of security personnel to maintain law and order.

In a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Samuel Jatau, the government condemned “the barbaric attacks on Dorowa Babuje and Nding communities on February 19, 22, and 23, which claimed innocent lives and triggered widespread unrest”.

The government also condemned a security incident that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday around the Terminus–Gadan Bako axis in Jos, which further fueled community tension in the Jos North Local Government Area of the state. It urged security agencies to intensify operations in the affected areas and ensure that those responsible are apprehended and brought to justice.

Jatau said, “The government strongly condemns these barbaric and senseless acts. These unfortunate incidents are coming at a time when sustained investments in dialogue, reconciliation, and community engagement have significantly improved the relative peace currently being enjoyed across the state.

“The governor has directed security agencies to immediately intensify operations in the affected areas, strengthen security presence in surrounding communities, and ensure that those responsible for these cowardly acts are apprehended and brought to justice.”
