The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Ireti Heebah Kingibe, has said that the medical equipment numbering over 10,000 which she distributed across the six area councils of FCT was part of her efforts to strengthen primary healthcare services and address the deteriorating state of healthcare infrastructure in her constituency.

Addressing thousands of beneficiaries, including representatives of the six area councils of FCT, Labour Party Executive, traditional rulers among others, present at the event held at the Senator’s Constituency Office in Kadokuchi, Jahi, the Senior Legislative Aide (SLA), to the Senator Dr. Christian Omofoma, noted that the initiative was made possible through the efforts of his Principal, who he said has been working tirelessly to bridge the gap in healthcare delivery in the territory.

“This initiative aims to complement existing healthcare facilities and provide essential support to health centres throughout the FCT.”

The equipment, which included wheelchairs, walkers, other walking aids, and critical medical tools, such as consumables were shared among general hospitals, primary healthcare centres, individuals, etc, according to need.

Omofoma however observed that FCT is disadvantaged, explaining that states have three senators, while the entire FCT has only one and as such, entitled to one portion of allocation to senators instead of three.

He commended his boss for her variius initiatives, saying: “She’s doing more than enough with the limited resources at her disposal. If she had received funding equivalent to what three senators in a state get, the impact would be far greater,” he explained.

The SLA also identified what he described as lack of collaboration between the Senate and the current FCT Minister, which he said has hindered the inclusion of key projects in the FCT budge

He however expressed hope that these challenges will be addressed by 2025, allowing for more impactful projects to benefit the FCT residents.

Meanwhile, the distribution drive has been lauded as a significant step towards alleviating the burden on the overstretched healthcare facilities in the FCT.

Also speaking at the event, Head of Constituency Office, HoC, Ambassador Emmanuel Destiny, noted that the project was a monumental success, with numerous healthcare facilities benefiting from the distribution of medical equipment.

“It was beyond my expectations. All the General Hospitals, National Hospitals, Federal Medical Centres, and Teaching Hospitals were present, and they left with their buses filled with medical supplies,” he said.
