Early insider opinions about Meryl’s performance suggest the Hollywood star is more than capable of playing the controversial figure, but many of you question why an American actress should be used over a British actress, and whether Meryl will be able to perfect the accent and voice in the film.

“Why oh why can we not find a British actress to play the part of Mrs. Thatcher? Oh of course, the American audiences have to have a personality they know, don’t they?” complained an aggrieved patriot.

However a commentator disagreed, saying: “Surely if there were British actors out there worthy of playing the role Phyllida Lloyd would have used them.” Dustyfan63 added: “If she can’t get the accent right, no one can!”

The photograph is taken from ‘The Iron Lady’, an upcoming biopic directed by renowned British theatre director Phyllida Lloyd, which follows Thatcher just before she took the UK into the Falklands War.

Turning the attention back to the image, many of the comments referred to Meryl looking too ‘soft’, ‘too attractive’ and ‘too sexy’ to play Margaret Thatcher. Another puts it bluntly, “Meryl Streep simply does not look evil enough”. But lizforslater noted that the “poise and expression are spot on”, although not everyone agreed, with fingalshouse writing, “the eyebrows are too high, and altogether too young looking.”

A fair point, with 16 Oscar nominations under her belt and two wins, Lloyd would be hard pressed to find a more qualified actor than Meryl.
