Kano State Government said it was on course to deliver 2000 houses currently under construction for low income earners in the state.
Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje made the commitment in a message to the opening of the 96th Council Meeting of the Association of Housing Corporations of Nigeria held in Kano on Tuesday.
Represented by his Deputy, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, Ganduje disclosed that the construction of the 2000 housing units was to address housing shortage in the state.
He recalled that the foundation stone for the housing unit, being handled by the state properties development corporation, was laid by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo in 2016.
The governor assured the council that the provision of affordable houses was a major priority of his administration.
Ganduje disclosed that the government had provided N1.1 billion in the 2017 budget for the construction of one bedroom, two bedroom and three bedroom detached bungalows to be executed by the State Housing Corporation.
The governor told the participants that the provision of houses should not be left to government alone, due to the over 16 million housing deficit in the country.
Earlier, the National President of the association, Alhaji Mohammed Usman said the body had mapped out new strategies of developing affordable and decent houses in Nigeria.
Usman explained that the meeting was aimed to addressing issues affecting the provision of decent and affordable houses across the country.
The Managing Director, Kano State Housing Corporation, Ali Mukhtar said the theme of the council meeting, `Relevance and Survival Strategies for Housing Agencies in Recession’, was chosen to explore solutions to current challenges affecting housing delivery.(NAN)
