KNSG urged to fund Almajiri schools with IGR

Kano state government has been urged to use its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to fund the Almajiri system of education in the state.
The call was made by a lecturer with the Department of Political Science, Bayero University Kano, Dr. Sa’id Ahmad Dukawa while speaking at a stakeholder policy forum on the origin of Almajiranci organized by Neem Foundation.
He noted that funding the Almajiri system of education would reform the scheme and thereby salvage the children from the many abuses they were being exposed to.
“I’m suggesting that government should look at the possibility of using its IGR to fund the Almajiri school which is suffering adverse neglect. By that, a lot will be achieved because the children going to these schools will get the desired education and training and they
will no longer be nuisance in the society.”
He further suggested that government should come up with a policy decision that would address the problems of the Almajiri, especially a policy that would compel parents to shoulder their responsibilities.
In her opening remarks, the Executive Director of Neem Foundation, Dr. Fatima Akilu said the stakeholder forum was aimed at raising public awareness to the deterioration of the Almajiri system and the threat it poses to the society.
She added that the current Almajiri system was making the children “vulnerable to abuses such as child labor, sexual exploitation, physical, emotional and psychological abuse, as well as increasing their vulnerability to radicalism.”
She therefore stressed the need for prioritizing the reformation of the system to achieve sustainable peace and stability in the country.
