It was gathered that government uncovered the fraudulent practices of some of its officials in the Ministry of Education following annual increment of money for the registration of final year secondary school students.
It was further gathered that officials used all means to defraud the state government of several millions of naira as the payment jumped from N200 million to N400 million and later to N700 million.
The source said as a result of the ugly trend, the state government which hitherto took care of the payment of WAEC fees for secondary school students, suspended the payment pending when perpetrators were fished out.
Meanwhile, the special adviser to Governor Idris Wada on media and strategy, Mr. Jacob Edi, who confirmed the story, said government, was on the trail of those who annually defrauded it of several millions of naira.
Edi explained that government discovered the fraud due to astronomical increase of money for WAEC fees, which continued to rise from initial N200 million to N400 million and later N700 million annually.
He however pleaded with parents to be patient with government as the suspension of the exercise was in their own interest, adding that parents can individually pay the WAEC fees for the final year students in the meantime and that government would reimburse them later.
He assured that government would investigate the matter and fish out the culprits, adding that the suspension was to ensure that people were not hiding under the benevolence of the state government to engage in fraudulent activities.
