The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has reinforced its commitment to strengthening basic education in Nigeria with the donation of learning materials to six Smart Schools located in Bauchi, Kano, Nasarawa, Ekiti, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Cross River State.

The intervention, carried out under KOICA’s Smart School initiative, is aimed at supporting effective teaching and learning while expanding access to digital education in public basic schools. The materials, distributed evenly across the six beneficiary schools, included 500 school bags, 1000 notebooks, 1,000 writing pens, mathematical sets, and hard drives, work diary and files, provided to support both pupils and teachers.

As part of the exercise, KOICA’s Country Director in Nigeria, Mr. Eunsub KIM, led a delegation on monitoring and donation visits to selected Smart Schools in Nasarawa, and Ekiti States. During the visits, the team also assessed the post-maintenance status of KOICA-funded Content Development Studios and Public Address Systems, ensuring the functionality and sustainability of the digital learning facilities.

The Nasarawa State visit, which took place on January 13 at the UBE Smart School, Lafia, focused on the presentation of educational materials to pupils as part of efforts to improve learning outcomes in public basic schools. During the event, mathematical sets were specifically distributed to pupils in the primary section to strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy skills and encourage early academic development.

The donation ceremony was attended by the Executive Chairman of Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Hon. Kasim Muhammad Kasim, alongside members of the SUBEB Board, who commended the initiative and reiterated the state’s commitment to sustaining the Smart School project.

On January 14, the KOICA delegation visited the UBE Smart School in Ekiti State, where similar donations were made to support pupils and teachers at the start of the academic session. In addition to the distribution of learning materials to pupils, teachers received diaries and hard drives to enhance lesson planning, record-keeping, and digital content delivery.

The visit also included monitoring of school resumption activities and an assessment of learning facilities. The ceremony was attended by the Executive Chairman of Ekiti State SUBEB, Prof. Femi Akinwunmi, the Onijin of Ijan, representatives of the school-Based Management Committee (SBMC) and the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), as well as other key education stakeholders.

The donations and monitoring activities reaffirm KOICA’s continued support for quality basic education and digital learning across Nigeria, while promoting the sustainability and effectiveness of its Smart School initiative.
