The Korean Cultural Centre organized a poetry fest in Abuja on Friday, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Korean Independence Movement.
The March 1st Independence Movement of 1919 marks the struggle and protests of about two million Koreans against the Japanese colonial rule.
To mark the occasion, many Nigerian poets were honoured during the ceremony, with the main winner of the night, Shamarang Silas from Kaduna, going home with N100,000 for his poem titled ‘Blessings.’
The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Nigeria, Lee In Tae, represented by the Deputy Head of Mission, Kim Do Hwan, remarked how the Korean people remain strong despite the hardships, and how they became the foundation for Korea to overcome further difficulties in its modern history.
“Korea’s people’s will towards an independent nation was expressed powerfully enough to spread to China, India, Russia, Europe, America and all over the world,” he said.
He also urged all the poets to use their poetry as a means of expressing their thoughts to relay the full meaning of “freedom, liberty and self-determination along the noble sacrifices made by compatriots to entrench these values in both Korea and Nigeria.”
