Moses Orshio Adasu University (formerly Benue State University), Moses Kpakor, has attributed the school’s impressive outing at the just concluded NUGA Games to the huge support from the Governor of Benue State. Rev. Father Hyacinth Iormem Alia and the acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Ayangerumun Kenen.

For the first time since its inception in 1992, Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University (MOAU), won five gold and three bronze medals to finish 8th out of 60 Universities.

The 27th edition of the Games was held from November 6-16 at the prestigious University of Jos with Benson Idahosa University emerging over all winners.

Speaking to Daily Trust, the former Super Eagles midfielder who is a lecturer in the Human and Kinetics department of MOAU, said before the last minute financial intervention by the acting VC, Prof. Kenen, the University was on the verge of not attending the Games.

“This history-making performance was made possible by the administration of Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, who is also the University’s visitor.

“It was also due to the concerted effort of acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Emmanuel Ayangarumun Kenen, who in his first day in office released funds for the contingent to travel to Jos,” said Kpakor.

One of the students who spoke on the condition of anonymity said if not for the financial support from the acting VC, the University would have missed out because funds were not made available to the Sports Unit for the Games.

He, therefore, pleaded with the VC to release funds for the purchase of sports equipment, and for early preparation for the next Games.

Meanwhile, speaking on the impressive performance of his students despite the challenges, Kpakor said it was a collective determination, courage and above all, the love for sports.

He also promised to liaise with the VC in the area of equipment, facilities upgrade and inter-faculty competitions to uncover hidden talents in the school.

“My athletes were determined to make the University proud. I am impressed and grateful for their overall performance.

“From the positive body language of the acting VC, I am very confident that the management of the University will surely recognize and appreciate the athletes for their historic accomplishment,” said the winner of AFCON 1990 silver medal.
