Equality and balanced distribution of dividends of democracy have noticeably gone up a gear in Jigawa State. The first question that might come to every reader’s mind of this write-up is what provoked my instinct to rain praise on Governor Badaru Abubakar. That’s why I choose not to mince too many words, without going directly to the main motive that propelled me to rhapsodise Governor Badaru and his government with blissful remarks.
In the increasingly need of qualified and professional teachers in our educational institutions, one must doff off his hat for Badaru Abubakar for the recent employment of almost four hundred graduates and holders of National Certificate of Education (NCE) into the government payroll. This recruitment was done with the sole purpose of arresting the debilitating scourge of perennial shortage of teachers in urban and rural schools of Jigawa State.
If you are very conversant with daily unfolding events in Jigawa, you must come to agree that it is one of the states that are suffering from severe, acute shortages of teachers in our schools. Quite a number of rural and urban schools lived under the mercies of Members of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). That’s why you see the number of Corps members sent quarterly to Jigawa, is comparatively higher than other states. This was done intentionally to augment the deficiency of teachers in rural and urban areas of the State.
Quite interestingly, based on what the Jigawa State Commissioner of Education said during the distribution of offers to the newly employed teachers, this current recruitment is the only first set, as preparations have already been made to continue with the second phase of the recruitment. Alternatively, if this trend is maintained, Jigawa State will witness a tectonic shift in terms of quality of its education, far from the current condition of our educational system. Additionally, to avoid a repeat of recruiting undesirable people into the system, the recruitment was forced to toe the line of recruitment rules and regulations. The recruitment was done after a series of numerous advertisements aired frequently through radio stations by Jigawa State Civil Service. And successful candidates emerged after subjecting them to numerous examinations and various competency tests conducted at Jigawa State University. Doing this, betrays the clandestine nature of some recruitments, which might end up in smuggling unwanted personalities that may further pollute the system. As some states lose faith on how to arrest this slayer of our children’s future, however, Governor Badaru’s belief is that, as a society, if we want a good future for our citizens, we must spend inordinate time, resources and energy on how best we will improve the quality of education. To achieve this, Governor Badaru recently engaged fresh, able-bodied holders of degree and (NCE) certificates into the ministry of education.
