I wish to congratulate the officers and men of the Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, Ikeja for their courage, nationalism, transparency and discipline in carrying out their mandate on behalf of the good people and government of Nigeria. Their most recent exploit in bursting the shameless arms smuggling ring who out of selfish consideration and in order to get rich overnight, wanted to set the nation ablaze deserves Presidential Awards in line with the ones enjoyed by sportsmen and women who did Nigeria proud by winning laurels for the country.
In the same vein, the Nigeria Customs Service must openly punish and prosecute all the dirty hands within its service at the ports who cleared the container carrying the 661 pump action rifles possibly and as usual after being compromised by the importers. The change mantra of the present administration of PMB seems to have no meaning after all the jingles, in many Federal establishments and state governments across the country. It is business as usual. Backlog of unpaid gratuities of deserving retirees are not the concern of the ‘elected’ civilian emperors or rulers, mostly from the ruining or ruling APC whose interests are road construction contracts where probably the hefty 15 or 10% from the down payments are assured for them or their cronies.
The Federal Government should rejig the NCS from top to bottom otherwise the business as usual will continue even if a Field Marshal is posted to run it. I am not indicting the present generalissimo of the customs but there must be complete changes through deliberate recruitment of thousands of personnel i.e. at least one thousand candidates from each State of the Federation for a period of three years. Similarly, any extra-budgetary allocations through so called bail-out to State Governments must be critically monitored by consultants appointed by the government to avoid diversions currently being alleged to be centre stage in many areas. The pensioners would forever be grateful if systematic clearance of arrears of pensions/gratuities by states is henceforth made a precondition for release of funds from the Federation Account to States.
