Inmates of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, on Monday, held a football competition in which JR Spotlight FC beat Domain Shelters FC 5-1 in the just concluded annual event.

A statement from the Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Correctional Service, FCT Command, ASC A. S. Duza, said the event, which started over a month ago, had seven teams in contest namely: NUGA Best FC, Livebridge FC, MFM FC, Chizo FC, Afrieuropean FC, Domain FC, and JR Spotlight FC.

In his remarks, the Controller of Corrections, FCT Command, Ibrahim Idris, who was represented by the Officer in Charge of Kuje Custodial Centre, Christopher Peter Jen, said the importance of sports to the inmates cannot be overemphasised as it can help in the development of their minds and bodies for proper rehabilitation.

The Executive Director, NUGA Best Foundation, Pst Hillary Chukuma, who spoke on behalf of other partners of the event, extolled the virtues and potential in the inmates, and, while congratulating the winners, stated that the aim of the event was to keep them alive.

“Our commitment to this annual tournament is a result of our firm belief that change is possible and their incarceration is not the end of life,” he said.

Highlight of the event was the presentation of trophies, medals and prizes to deserving players to reward and encourage the inmates’ participation.

Amongst those awarded were best player, Mustapha Umar, best goal keeper, Williams Daniel, and top goal scorer, Hassan Sadiq.
