The Chairman of Kuje Area Council, FCT, Mr Abdulahi Galadima yesterday distributed fertilisers to farmers in the ten electoral wards at subsidised rate to boost agricultural activities in the area.
Galadima said that the gesture was aimed at encouraging farming and to position farming as a business for the development of the agricultural sector in the country.
He described agriculture as the backbone of economic development of any country, which should be given adequate attention to boost food production.
“Fertiliser does not only assist in increasing yields and promoting healthy growth of plants but also in their development.
“Agriculture is the main source of livelihood for many people to contribute to national revenue, food production, employment opportunity, foreign exchange and food security.
“The increasing number of population means higher demand for food and demand for scarce commodities in the market.
“Threat in agricultural production such as loss of soil fertility and lack of nutrient may result to low percentage of food production,’’ he said.
The chairman said his administration was committed to boosting agricultural activities in the area council as the food basket of the FCT to eliminate hunger in the territory.
He, however, called on youths in the area to take farming as a serious business and to avoid all social vices but contribute to nation’s building.
Mr Azaki Yohana, a farmer from Gaube community thanked the chairman for the kind gesture and promised to use the fertiliser judiciously. (NAN)
