A former Kano State Governor and presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, marked his birthday with the announcement of plans to upgrade the Nafisatu College of Nursing Sciences, Kwankwaso, into a full-fledged medical university.

The event, held at his hometown, Kwankwaso village in Madobi Local Government Area, also featured an inspection of ongoing academic activities and recognition of staff and students for their achievements since the college’s establishment in 2019.

Kwankwaso, who founded the institution as part of his broader investment in education and human capital development, said the planned upgrade was part of efforts to expand opportunities for young women to pursue advanced medical and health-related studies.

He commended the Kano State Government for sponsoring community midwives at the institution, noting that the initiative plays a vital role in strengthening healthcare delivery, particularly in rural communities.

“The idea of community midwives is to train and certify them to serve in their communities and beyond, especially here in Kano State,” Kwankwaso added.

“We will be moving to the site where we intend to upgrade this institution from a College of Nursing Sciences to a Medical University,” he said.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman, Governing Council of the College, Professor Saleh Ngaski Garba, described the establishment of the school as one of Kwankwaso’s most remarkable humanitarian and developmental contributions.

He said, “It is the first privately owned College of Nursing in Kano State and the second in northern Nigeria, aimed at contributing to the health sector’s critical manpower supply.”

He revealed that the college, which began with Basic Nursing and Basic Midwifery programmes, has expanded to include Post-Basic Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing, Community Nursing, and Community Midwifery, making it the first private college in Nigeria to introduce post-basic psychiatric nursing training.

According to him, the college has so far produced 416 graduates, comprising 277 nurses, 119 midwives, and 20 community midwives, many of whom are already working in hospitals across the country.
