A former Peoples Democratic Party gubernatorial aspirant in Kwara State, Alhaji Mohammed Ajia Ibrahim, has formally defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress.(APC).

He declared that his conscience and sense of national duty compelled his decision.

Daily Trust reports that his defection has heightened political permutations ahead of the 2027 governorship contest in Kwara State.

Ajia, a retired police officer, said his move followed “months of deep reflection, extensive consultations and a careful assessment of Nigeria’s prevailing political and security realities.

In a personally signed statement, the former PDP stalwart said his decision was driven by a conviction that the country requires urgent collective action to confront its mounting security challenges.

“My humble upbringing shaped my lifelong commitment to public service and the improvement of the lives of ordinary Nigerians,” he stated.

“That has remained my guiding principle in life and it has shaped my involvement in business and politics”, he disclosed.

Ajia explained that after evaluating different political platforms, he found the APC to be the most viable vehicle through which he could contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s stability and survival.

According to him, the nation’s current battle against insurgency, banditry and other forms of criminality demands experienced hands and practical engagement beyond partisan sentiments.

He stressed that his defection is not tied to any quest for elective office or political appointment.

The former police officer disclosed that since resigning from the Nigeria Police Force in 2017, he has neither sought nor accepted any government appointment, insisting that his public engagement has remained rooted in personal conviction rather than political patronage.

Ajia reaffirmed his readiness to deploy his professional experience, deep understanding of Nigeria’s security architecture and grassroots networks in support of ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity.

He expressed optimism that a synergy between professional leadership at the national level and community-based intelligence at the grassroots would ultimately steer the country out of its security turbulence.
