The Kwara State Government has launched climate change club in public schools.

The government said the move was in its bid to catch them young and introduce students to the campaign with a view to sensitising the populace to the dangers of deforestation.

 The State Commissioner for Environment, Mallam Shehu Ndanusa Usman, disclosed this during the launching of the club at Government High School, Adeta, Ilorin, on Thursday. 

According to him, “Illegal felling of economic trees is at the expense of the state and nature and the environment may not be sustainable due to the loss of biodiversity and pressure on the entire ecosystem.

“The outcome will affect all aspects of our lives, ranging from health, food, security of life and property and others that have to do with our daily lives.”

 He said the government wanted the students to be well informed about climate change and join hands with the government to eradicate deforestation/logging, indiscriminate dumping of refuse, illegal burning of the bush and join in sustaining a clean and healthy environment.

 In his remarks, the Principal of Government High School, Adeta, Abdulkadir Mohammed, praised the initiative and the government for believing in the youth.
