Senator Saliu Mustapha has been named recipient of the traditional title of 1st Tabariki Nupe, a historic honour to be conferred by the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Yahaya Abubakar.

The decision was formally communicated to the lawmaker in Abuja when a delegation from the Bida Emirate Council presented him with a Letter of Credence conveying the emirate’s approval.

The delegation was led by Chairman of the Bida Emirate Traditional Turbaning Committee, Alhaji Kassim N. Yawa, alongside the committee’s secretary, Alhaji Isah Isah Muhammad.

According to the delegation, the title Tabariki is derived from the Arabic word Tabarakah, meaning abundance and infinite blessings, and is interpreted as “Blessed Son of the Nupe Emirate.”

The title is said to be the first of its kind and a historic development within the emirate.

The honour is seen as recognition of Mustapha’s contributions to public service and his relationship with the Nupe Kingdom.

Reacting, the senator described the recognition as humbling and symbolic.

He said it reflected the enduring historical and cultural ties between the Bida and Ilorin emirates.

“This honour reflects a shared heritage and longstanding brotherhood between our people,” he said.

Mustapha, who also holds the traditional title of Turaki of Ilorin, said the recognition would further strengthen his commitment to service and development.

According to him, the conferment was a reminder that contributions to humanity do not go unnoticed.

“This honour will inspire me to remain committed to public service and to continue working for the good of society,” he added.

The senator also expressed appreciation to the Etsu Nupe and the Bida Emirate Council for the profound honour, pledging to uphold the dignity of the title.

“I accept this with humility and a deep sense of responsibility. I will continue to serve with dedication and integrity,” he added.

The date for the formal conferment ceremony is expected to be announced by the emirate council.
