Kwara speaker promises revolution in criminal justice system

He said priority would be given to the bill on Criminal Justice System with a view to bringing succour to awaiting trial inmates who populate the nation’s prison yards.
Speaking with newsmen after the inauguration of the assembly, Ahmad, immediate past chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Justice, stressed that the revolution that was brought to the criminal justice system in Nigeria would be localised in Kwara State.
It would be recalled that Ahmed as a member of the 7th House of Representatives which was dissolved penultimate week, sponsored 10 bills bothering on Criminal Justice System which were passed same day having undergone legislative procedures.
The bills were aimed at eliminating anachronistic laws that do not reflect the current reality and tend to prolong justice delivery in various courts in Nigeria thereby denying suspects, especially in criminal cases, of speedy justice.
Ahmad said, “There is a revolution in criminal justice in Nigeria, there’s a bill which I sponsored and was passed on that. That is on the federal level and we have to replicate that in Kwara within a few months so that anyone that is accused of a crime is either jailed or you are free.
“This issue of undergoing trial for seven years is no longer tenable at least not in Kwara State courts.”
