The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed a N9m fine and a three-point deduction on Kwara United following crowd violence during their rescheduled Matchday 22 encounter against Rivers United on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at the Ilorin Township Stadium.
The sanctions arose from Kwara United’s failure to provide adequate security, which allowed unauthorized persons to access restricted areas of the stadium.
Chaos erupted after the final whistle, as dozens of Kwara United supporters surged onto the pitch, preventing Rivers United players, officials, and match officials from leaving the field.
The officials were attacked and held back for more than 40 minutes before order was restored.
Reacting in a statement issued on Thursday, the club said, “It is with profound regret and deep concern that Kwara United Football Club addresses the unfortunate incidents of violence that occurred following our rescheduled Gameweek 22 match against Rivers United FC, which ended in a 1-1 draw in Ilorin today, February 18, 2026.
“The club unequivocally condemns the actions of the irrational elements who engaged in such unacceptable behaviour, particularly the attack on Chief Okey Kpalukwu, the respected chairman of chairmen in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).”
Kwara United also pledged to ensure accountability and put measures in place to prevent a recurrence.
Beyond the financial penalties, the club will forfeit three points and three goals from its accumulated totals.
Kwara United have also been ordered to play their remaining home fixtures at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena Abeokuta and to identify and prosecute the irate supporters involved in the assaults.
