Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed made the announcement in Ilorin while receiving players and officials of the academy, winners of the 14th NNPC/Shell Cup All Nigeria Secondary Schools Football Championships.

The governor noted that by the feat, the academy has succeeded in marketing itself to the outside world.

He gave an assurance that government would give the academy all the necessary support to make it an internationally acclaimed institution.

“The essence of the academy is to create an environment for youths to develop their talents and become future leaders,’’ the governor said.

He added that the government would also strive to make the academy a self sustaining one.

The governor, who commended the players, also donated N1 million to the team.

He also assured the players of government’s continuous support to enable them excel in their activities.

Earlier in his address, Mr Kumbi Titiloye, the Administrative Director of the academy requested for the upgrading of the academy..

Titiloye said that it was the first time the academy would take part in the tournament and the first Kwara representative to win the cup.

According to him, his players are the youngest at the tournament and that they will represent Nigeria at a youth tournament in the United Kingdom in July 2012.

He also commended the government for providing funds and other logistic assistance for the up keep of the academy.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the academy emerged the winner of the competition on March 25 by beating National Foundation College from Delta 4-1 on penalty shoot-out.

The two teams had tied at 2-2 draw at the end of the regulation and extra time. (NAN)
