Eighteen students of a university in Kwara State narrowly escaped death on Wednesday after the commercial bus conveying them caught fire along Shao Road near Sobi Barracks in Ilorin, the state capital.
Daily Trust gathered that the students were forced to jump out of the 18-seater vehicle in panic as flames quickly spread, prompting a desperate scramble for safety. Fortunately, no casualties were recorded.
The Kwara State Fire Service confirmed the incident Wednesday evening, noting that its personnel responded promptly to a distress call and successfully extinguished the fire.
“Yes, our firemen responded promptly after receiving a distress call and were able to put out the blaze. However, the bus, with registration number XUF 134 ZD, was completely destroyed,” said Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, Head of Media and Publicity for the service.

He explained that preliminary investigations revealed the fire was caused by a spark from the engine compartment, which escalated rapidly and consumed the entire vehicle.
Adekunle added that the Director of the State Fire Service sympathised with the bus owner over the loss and urged all motorists to carry out routine checks on their vehicles before embarking on any journey. He emphasized the importance of preventive maintenance in avoiding such life-threatening incidents.
