In 2015, FilmOne Distribution, in partnership with the British Council, and Altive Media are bringing home the historical piece to be staged by the renowned English National Opera as conducted by Roland Böer and directed by Peter Konwitschny.
La Traviata is a tragic love story, amidst beautiful, soul soothing, music piece by Verdi. It was very popular and one of the most performed operas worldwide in 1853 and tells the story of Violetta Valéry, a beautiful French ‘courtesan,’ who throws a party after recovering from a life threatening illness.
She meets her secret admirer, Alfredo Germont, who later declares his undying love for her. She falls in love with him and dumps her lover, BaronDouphol. Caught in the web of debts, she secretly sells her belongings in Paris to offset them. Alfredo realises her sacrifice and leaves for Paris to take care of things.
His father, Giorgio, in his absence, convinces her to break up with his son, as the unhealthy relationship was affecting his daughter’s possible engagement and his family’s reputation. The intrigues, suspense, betrayal, begin to play out and a tragic incident occurs that haunts Alfredo forever.
Mr. Keken Mparu, FilmOne Distribution, boss said it is the third operatic piece of the company’s event cinema calendar. “British Council has indeed been very supportive of this laudable project. We believe that with more of these great pieces, Nigerians and foreigners domiciled here will relish the beauty of contemporary opera and other event cinema packages in our pipeline,” he said.
‘La Traviata’ will be screened in Kano, Lagos, Ibadan, Port Harcourt and Calabar at Filmhouse cinemas.
