Dr. Afolayan made this known recently while speaking at the 29th annual conference of Nigerian Institute of Science and Laboratory Technology (NISLT) with the topic, “Science (Laboratory) Agricultural Value Chain and Food Security: There exists a Relationship”.
The ARMTI boss who was represented at the event by Dr. O. A.  Oladunni, said that certain responsibilities that a laboratory technologist has been assigned with are germane to the growth of agriculture in the country.
“A laboratory technologist is one who has been trained in the areas of carrying out laboratory works, which include skills in carrying out experiment as instructed by the scientist, maintenance of laboratory equipment and overseeing the daily activities that are carried out in the laboratory.
“These duties are germane to the success of teaching and research in agriculture. Achieving food security involves the use of laboratory to carry out experiments that will lead to increase in yield of crop and animal, improved quality of crop and animals and safety of crop and animal products. Laboratory technologists therefore, are important to food security,” Afolayan said.
In his address, the Registrar/Director-General of NISLT, Dr. Ighodalo Ijagbone noted that the practice of science laboratory is one that cuts across many sectors of the economy, all of which, he said, were being driven by information.
