A Civil Society Organsation, Network for Accountability and Transparency Crusade has urged organised labour to respect the court order halting its proposed nationwide strike action schedule to begin Tuesday.

The National Coordinator of the group, Dr. Roland Giwa at the weekend said that government has given reasonable explanations on why the N30, 000 minimum wage being demanded by the organized labour was not feasible due to the poor state of the nation’s finances.

He said there are already allegations the intended strike is politically motivated, but urged the labour leaders to rise above such personal interest and return to the negotiation table.

The statement reads: “As a pan Nigerian organization, organized labour should be the last group ever to disobey a valid court order. We urge the labour leaders to have a rethink about disobeying court orders and going ahead with the proposed strike action.”

NUP inaugurates universities pensioners union

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has inaugurated the national interim body for pensioners in the university sector.

Speaking while inaugurating the body, NUP National President Dr Abel Afolayan said the inauguration was a milestone in the history of the Universities sectoral branch of NUP as pensioners were not hitherto properly organised under NUP in all the universities.

He said, “Before now, we had fragmented associations and different groups that were never recognised and empowered by extant labour laws to organise the pensioners. In many instances, the self –appointed NUP officials were only working for their selfish interests and at cross purposes with the National Headquarters of the union.’’

Afolayan urged the inaugurated members to rise to the occasion to address the problems facing pensioners such as non payment of pensions and allowances and be guided by the union’s constitution in conducts and operations.
