The Labour Party has welcomed the recognition of its Interim National Leadership led by Senator Nenadi E. Usman by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing the development as a relief and a major step towards restoring stability within the party.
The party said in a statement by Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Interim National Chairman, that INEC’s action was in compliance with a recent judgment of the Federal High Court, which directed the electoral body to recognise Senator Usman’s leadership as the only legitimate leadership of the Labour Party.
According to the statement, the court ruling expressly excluded all other individuals laying claim to the leadership of the party, thereby affirming the interim leadership as the valid and lawful authority.
The party commended the leadership of INEC for what it described as standing firmly on the side of the law, justice and constitutionalism, and for demonstrating obedience to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
It noted that the recognition by INEC would bring an end to the prolonged internal disputes and uncertainties that had affected the party over the past year, and appealed to its members across the country to unite behind the interim leadership.
The Labour Party said the interim leadership was committed to repositioning the party ahead of forthcoming elections, adding that unity, dedication and collective sacrifice were essential for achieving its goals as a major opposition party.
The statement further reaffirmed the party’s resolve to provide Nigerians with a credible, people-oriented alternative platform, while appreciating supporters nationwide for their resilience and unwavering support during the period of internal challenges.
It also commended the judiciary for upholding justice and described the media as principled in its pursuit of truth and fairness.
The party appealed to Nigerians for patience and continued support as it works to rebuild and strengthen its structures nationwide, assuring the public of its determination to return the Labour Party to winning ways ahead of the next election cycle.
