Labour unions shut down Benue as indefinite strike begins

Organised labour on Tuesday shut down government offices in all 23 local government areas of Benue State as it embarked on indefinite strike action over unpaid salaries.

Officials of the labour unions were seen at strategic offices gate to ensure that workers complied with the order to remain at home until the state government pays several months’ salaries owed them.

Commenting on the development, the State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Godwin Anya, hailed the workers for carrying out the union directive.

The union said workers in the state are been owed seven months arrears of salaries, adding that teachers at the local government level are been owed 11 months from November last year and 13 months arrears of pensions and gratuities respectively.
